I learnt to sew on an ancient Singer hand powered machine that came from my grannies. She bought it in the nineteen twenties. I’ve struggled over the years to get to grips with electric but it’s not going to happen and I’ve just bought an almost identical model to the old one on ebay- where it was being sold as a curio, for window dressing displays. Hand machines may be slower with less features but you get 100% more control and they dont do scary stuff like electric models.

I saw that, I’m sure she don’t want to get people confused, insert your bobbin always counterclock wise, in any single needle machine, other wise it will tend to get off and mess you up!

hehehe, makes me laugh… at 2:10 she explains how the bobbin should be threaded, yet inserts the bobbin into the bobbin case WRONG way round!!!! Thread should come off the bobbin anti-clockwise, before being inserted…!

I know so – I sell these machines for a living. I will work, but eventually it will go wrong and there is a possibility that the in-build bobbinhouse will break.

Bobbin threading is wrong. Clockwise in handhold bobbinhouses and counter-clockwise in these in-build bobbinhouses.

I stand corrected. Many more than 16 years ago, I was taught to put the bobbin in with the thread winding clock-wise, but having just tried it anti-clockwise, I see it works both ways. Apologies to the vid producers.
What does ‘Your (sic) just … what they like’ mean?

I got a Kenmore sewing machine at sears when I was 16 for 99 bucks, Ive had it for seven years now and have sown thru all of my broken jeans. it was a good beginner, I just got a new one off of ebay last week. Just read up on them, For the first couple or years all you really need on your beginner machine is strait stich, zigzag, button holer, bobbin winder, reverse (or course, and a lite which is pretty much standard. All the rest of that will cost you more than youll use it to begin with.

craigslist! You can try them out before you buy them and they’re local so no shipping charges. The downside is the cheap ones tend to be things people found in their basements from old aunts so unless you know what you’re looking for they may not work. Try to find a manual online before you go in so you know how to load and sew a few stitches, and bring your own thread. I got two machines off craigslist and they’re amazing, I couldn’t be happier. $25 each for a 73 singer and a 66 singer.
